So you want to develop your business idea?

Hmmm…what are you reading?

Described as a pretty chilled person, Aaron Wallace is the mastermind behind the self-titled brand “By Aaron Wallace”. Starting as barber, frequently hearing the difficulties of his Black male clients (and understanding them himself), he set out to create a series of products to nourish and aid the growth and maintenance of Black men’s hair and skin. As a creative and analytical character, this task suited Wallace greatly. Also a self-professed workaholic, the products he produces are able to aid the people he loves to spend time with: friends and family. We caught up with Aaron to ask a few questions pertaining to his relationship with reading, as well as his take on a top book list!

How would you best describe your company?

By Aaron Wallace is focused on creating high quality grooming products for Black men, we want to be the first point of call for anything to do with Black hair and skin.

What was the first meaningful book you recall ever reading?

Can I name two?

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiosaki was eye opening in helping me to understand the way money works and some of the habits I had to both learn and unlearn when it comes to finance.
How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnagie was a complete paradigm shift in terms of understanding people, building better relationships and improving leadership techniques.

What was the first book you read this year?

This year with everything going on my reading has fallen off a bridge at the moment, but I was in the middle of reading “Thinking fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman.

I believe that who we are is essentially a physical manifestation of our brain, so understanding how our brains work and think will aid us in understanding ourselves and others.

What is your relationship with reading like?

I love to read mostly for knowledge, to learn new skills and concepts from some of the smartest minds that would have otherwise been foreign to me.

I go through phases where I’ll do loads of reading and others where I prefer to listen to audio. If it’s a really important topic I will read with a notepad so that I can re read the core concepts again at a later date.

How much of an importance does reading have to you?

I see reading and meditation as physical exercise for the mind, so to me it’s just as if not more important than looking after your physical body.

Describe a way in which a book has meaningfully changed or affected your life?

Books can serve many purposes for different people, for some it’s adventure and escapism for others its inspirational stories.

For me reading has always been a method of self improvement, I’ve used books to understand abstract concepts, learn new skills and most importantly improve and develop myself. Books have helped me to better understand life, people and my interactions within it.
